Saturday, October 15, 2005WORKING MOTHERS MAKE KIDS FATThe issues surrounding being a mother are complicated and getting more complicated everyday! It starts as soon as birth:natural childbirth vs. epideral. Breastfeeding vs. bottle feeding. Co-sleeping vs. crib. Cry-it-out vs. going in. Public School Vs. Private School vs. Home school. and the big one: Stay at home Vs. Work. These are just a fraction of the issues. Every choice you make lables you as a good/bad mother in the views of other people. Now we have another reason to feel bad about our selves. Anne-Marie from A Mama's Rant reported back in august about a study linking working mothers and obesity. Whether you blame school vending machines, fast food, or too much TV, American kids have never been fatter. Now, Wellesley College professor Phil Levine has found a link between working mothers and childhood obesity. One finding in his study was particularly surprising.Well, I can say that the thought of working increases my stress level when I think of dinner and bedtimes. I can really see alot of drive-thrus and dinner in a box. Gina froze in time on 9:18 PM [ | ]
Friday, October 14, 2005President Bush's approval ratings are in a steep decline![]() President Bush is seeing his number go from bad to worse, according to a new poll by the Pew Research Center. The survey found that only 38 percent of Americans think the president is doing a good job, down from 50 percent in January. And most surprisingly (well to some) is for the first time since he took office most people think he will be judged as an unsuccessful president 'That's a pretty bleak assessment,' said Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Research Center. 'The numbers for President Bush are really going from bad to worse.' In September, a Pew poll found that Bush's approval rating dropped as a response to what was considered to be a poor handling of the relief effort for Hurricane Katrina's victims. The latest Pew poll, a national survey of 1,500 adults conducted Oct. 6 to Oct. 10, shows that his numbers are continuing to slip. And it's not just the "left wing conspiracy", his numbers are even starting to slip among his loyal Republican base. In his base his numbers are still very high, 80 percent approval, but this is down from 90 percent from earlier this year. Interestingly enough, in his Republican base, only 62 percent, that he will go down in history as a successful president. Gina froze in time on 12:28 PM [ | ]

Pagan veteran wants pentacle symbol on his grave![]() Again it seems like despite the fact that millions of Americans identify them selves as pagan, the pagan does not get the same respect as other "main stream" religions. A Pagan veteran wants a pentacle, the "cross" of the pagan relegion to be on his grave stone when he dies. A simple request you might think, but not so when it comes to our government "But the Defense Department doesn't allow the pentacle -- a five-pointed star in a circle -- on markers in national cemeteries. The Defense Department recognized Wiccans in 1996 but the National Cemetery Association of the Veterans Affairs Department hasn't authorized the symbol. " Gina froze in time on 7:15 PM [ | ]
Wednesday, October 12, 2005Motherhood - it's probably just another word for being bonkersAsk any mother, and she'll most likely tell you she's a short drive to looney-ville and according to a new study, she may be right. A psychiatrist at Yale University has found surprising similarities between OCD sufferers and first time parents. Now he is speculating that OCD occurs when the brain circuits associated with parenting are triggered in the absence of a baby.Recently he has interviewed new parents and found that just before and just after the birth the feelings and fears of both mothers and fathers are strikingly reminiscent of those voiced by OCD sufferers. Looks like the drive just got a little shorter. Gina froze in time on 10:04 AM [ | ]
Monday, October 10, 2005Gore condemns Modern media coverage Gore gave an excellent speech on the nature of modern public discourse and the critical role it played not only in the formation of our country, but in understanding out basic freedoms."I thought maybe it was an aberration when three-quarters of Americans said they believed that Saddam Hussein was responsible for attacking us on September 11, 2001. But more than four years later, between a third and a half still believe Saddam was personally responsible for planning and supporting the attack. "But some extremely important elements of American Democracy have been pushed to the sidelines . And the most prominent casualty has been the "marketplace of ideas" that was so beloved and so carefully protected by our Founders. It effectively no longer exists. During the speech Gore did plug his new cable network, Current TV. Current is trying to foster greater viewer/broadcaster interaction with live events and viewer-produced programming. I don't think Gore's new cable network, Current TV, is the answer, It really was a great speech. And now we know what Gore has been doing since the 2000 election. On a lighter note, if you have not heard this song AL Gore By Monkey Bowl, you really need to listen. Al Gore actually makes his "singing" debut on this album! You need to listen to the whole song, wait for it...... To read the speech: http://www.breitbart.com/news/2005/10/06/D8D2IU703.html Gina froze in time on 1:02 PM [ | ]
Sunday, October 09, 2005Science of the brain![]() University of Chicago researchers find human brain still evolving: "Our studies indicate that the trend that is the defining characteristic of human evolution - the growth of brain size and complexity - is likely still going on,' said lead researcher for both papers Bruce Lahn, PhD, assistant professor of human genetics at the University of Chicago and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. 'Meanwhile, our environment and the skills we need to survive in it are changing faster then we ever imagined. I would expect the human brain, which has done well by us so far, will continue to adapt to those changes." So does this mean we may some day be like Cone head? Maybe we will all have psychic powers in the future! It reminds me of the book Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke, aliens come to earth to help with our "next evolutionary step, and join the great "collective". Stem Cells may help Repaire Spinal Cord Injuries: Researchers at the UC Irvine Reeve-Irvine Research Center have used adult human neural stem cells to successfully regenerate damaged spinal cord tissue and improve mobility in mice. The findings point to the promise of using this type of cells for possible therapies to help humans who have spinal cord injuries. Study results appear online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Early Edition. The cells were transplanted into the mice and they had improved mobility, but when the cells (the human cells) were destroyed the mice were unable to walk again, leading the researchers to believe that the transplanted cells made the "bridge" over the damaged area. The research has only be successful on injures that are "new", older injuries do not improve with the cell transplant. First Evidence Of Brain Abnormalities Found In Pathological Liars A University of Southern California study has found the first proof of structural brain abnormalities in people who habitually lie, cheat and manipulate others. It's not my fault my brain made me do it!!! This could well be a new defense in court. "your honor, my client could not help but take millions from the retirement accounts of these poor honest seniors, he has too much white matter!" Gina froze in time on 10:38 AM [ | ]
Single mom's, marriage not in the forecast![]() Women who have children out of wedlock are about 30 percent less likely to get married than childless single women, according to a new study. When unwed mothers do marry, they are more likely to land husbands who are significantly older and less educated, bigger losers, than those of women who don't have children. "It's more difficult for unwed mothers to get married, and if they do, they tend to not marry well," said Zhenchao Qian, associate professor of sociology at Ohio State University. Both of my sisters had children out of wedlock. My older sister has never been married and the men she has dated have been big looser! My younger sister ended up marrying her "babies daddy" and it has been a disaster for them. They were young when they had Nick (she's two years younger then me and Nick is four years older than Mikal, you can figure out the rest). Her husband did not get any other training or education after he finished high school, she atleast went to a trade school so she could be a Physician's assistant. They are now getting a divorce, after he violated his parole, drug related. So, I'd have to agree with this study. Gina froze in time on 8:26 AM [ | ]
