Best post of the week goes to....![]() I've decided to do a best post of the week from the blogs I read. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did, part humor, part politics: Blue Moon Mama: Flying Spaghetti Monster: "Mr. Henderson has written a letter to the school board proposing that if the school board wants to include alternate theories, it ought to include the belief that the universe was created by the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM). The followers of the FSM also believe that every other Friday is a holiday and that heaven consists of a stripper factory (query: is this where strippers are made or what?) and a beer volcano. Worshippers must wear pirate garb when honoring their deity." Pastafarians UNITE! Gina froze in time on 8:34 AM [ | ]
Thursday, August 25, 2005White bread gets whole-grain makeover WonderBread, synonymous with the fluffy spongy white bread and a favorite of children across the US, is getting a make over. Interstate Bakeries Corp, maker of wonder Bread are test-marketing "new" white bread made with 100% whole grain and plans to release nation wide next year.ConAgra Foods is behind this "extreme Makeover" after spending several millions and eight years developing Ultragrain White Whole Wheat, a grain that was developed the old fasioned was (a.k.a. not genetically modified). This grain has the same texture as bleached flour and doesn't have the same chewiness. On the big plus side, 2,600 school districts across the country have signed on to carry some of ConAgra's Ultragrain items, including burritos, pizza and pies made with whole grain crust. The new Ultragrain has it's critics, claiming that some products can market as "whole grain" and "confuse well-meaning parents" (their quote not mine) "What they're doing is playing to the marketplace perception that whole grain is good for us - which it certainly is - but they're putting a little bit in there so they can say that it's there," Pescatore said. "They're not really doing a great service." According to FDA guidelines, products must have only whole-wheat flour to be labeled as "whole wheat." But parents should still be cautious about other ingredients such as high-fructose corn syrup — and should read labels to make sure whole grains are listed as the first ingredient, she said. Wednesday, August 24, 2005News: California battles FDA over tuna safety labels California Attorney General, Bill Lockyer, is sueing several of the nations top Tuna produces, trying to force them to put warning labels for pregant women and children. A 1986 CA law requires that companies provide "clear and reasonable" warnings before exposing people to known carcinogens or reproductive toxins. But even though the risk of mercury in tuna is widely know, the FDA is in direct conflict with Federal laws regarding warning labels. The FDA argues that the new CA law "frustrate the carefully considered federal approach to advising consumers of both the benefits and possible risks of eating fish and shellfish." Under federal law, he said, the FDA "has been given broad authority to regulate the labels of food products,'' and a state has no authority to take a stricter approach. They go on to say that the lawsuit could have "adverse public health consequences". Not suprising the FDA's stance on the matter has met with applause from the tuna industry. "We are pleased that the FDA continues to recognize that canned tuna is a healthy food and provides many nutritional benefits to the public," said David Burney, executive director of the US Tuna Foundation. "Tuna should be treated as an important source of nutrition and an important food source for the low-income community, not a political football." A spokesman for the AG's office says he believes the FDA is simply protecting big business at the expense of California consumers. Gina froze in time on 10:03 PM [ | ]
Moving Sucks...![]() So we talked (we've been talking for three years) and it's final, we are leaving Saint Louis and moving to IN. We are going to do it, I'm packing. We have about three months of work on the house and more stuff than we can shake a stick at. I see a yard sale in my near future. Just the thought of moving with two small kids is starting to give me an ulcer. How do you do it? Gina froze in time on 8:06 PM [ | ]
Tuesday, August 23, 2005Facts About Bullying![]() NASP Center Bully Fact sheet: Facts About Bullying * Bullying is the most common form of violence in our society; between 15% and 30% of students are bullies or victims. * A recent report from the American Medical Association on a study of over 15,000 6th-10th graders estimates that approximately 3.7 million youths engage in, and more than 3.2 million are victims of, moderate or serious bullying each year. * Between 1994 and 1999, there were 253 violent deaths in school, 51 casualties were the result of multiple death events. Bullying is often a factor in school related deaths. * Membership in either bully or victim groups is associated with school drop out, poor psychosocial adjustment, criminal activity and other negative long-term consequences. * Direct, physical bullying increases in elementary school, peaks in middle school and declines in high school. Verbal abuse, on the other hand, remains constant. The U.S. Department of Justice reports that younger students are more likely to be bullied than older students. * Over two-thirds of students believe that schools respond poorly to bullying, with a high percentage of students believing that adult help is infrequent and ineffective. * 25% of teachers see nothing wrong with bullying or putdowns and consequently intervene in only 4% of bullying incidents." Watch for Bullying and have a zero tollerance. I have people I know and love who are adults and still haunted by their "school yard bullying". Don't let it happen to your child. Monday, August 22, 2005Is there too much athletic activity among some children?![]() With obesity rising among our kids, we don't tend to focus on the other end of the spectrum, too much athletic. Doctors across the country are seeing an dramatic increase in preventable athletic injuries that will result in life long problems in young people. "Sports injuries are becoming the most common reason young people are going to the emergency room," said Jordan D. Metzl, M.D., medical director of the Sports Medicine Institute for Young Athletes at New York City's Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) Teaching kids not only how to kick the ball, but also how to listen to and take care of thier bodies. Some great tips from Lauren Antonucci, MS, RD, CDE, CDN, director of Nutrition Energy : * Discuss the importance of good nutrition with athletes; * Encourage hydration with sports drinks and water; * Reinforce the need for adequate calories and carbohydrates in the diet; * Deal with body weight and body image issues tactfully and carefully. "The most important thing a coach can do for nutrition awareness is to set an excellent example for kids to follow," Antonucci said. Dr. Metzl also said coaches and parents should be concerned about young athletes' over-commitments in other areas of his or her life. Some signs that the young person is feeling overburdened include: * Tense, moody, and irritable much of the time, especially around practice and game times; * Doing poorly academically; * Pursuing few activities besides sports; * Spending little time relaxing or seeing friends; * Focusing primarily on improving athletic skills and spending little time on the surrounding community; * Treating games as an obligation rather than as fun; * Demonstrating reluctance to go to games or practice; * Feeling exhausted during the school day. And MY tip to parents, let your child be a child! Kids do well with structure, but they also need free time to unwind and be themselves, let your child enjoy their childhood, It's over too soon! Early Clinical Signs of Ovarian Cancer Breaking news from Wiley interScience due to be published in the October issue of CANCER."Ovarian cancer has been thought of as a silent killer, coming to the attention of physicians only at its late stages when prognosis is poor. Adding to ovarian cancer's deadly pattern is that it is a fast growing tumor, progressing from early to advanced disease in as little time as a year. There has been increasing evidence for this poorly studied disease to indicate patients may exhibit symptoms many months before advanced disease and diagnosis occurs. As early as 12 months before diagnosis, women with ovarian cancer were at least twice as likely to present to a physician with abdominal swelling or pelvic pain. As early as nine months before diagnosis, women with ovarian cancer were also more likely to complain of abdominal pain. Overall, about 40 percent of these women had physician claims indicating one or more visits for abdominal or pelvic symptoms between 36 and 4 months before their ovarian cancer was diagnosed." Women should listen to their bodies. Ovarian cancer is a deadly and silent killer, delaying treatment by even 4 months can be disastrous because this is such a fast killer. If you are having abdominal pain, request a test for ovarian cancer, it may save your life. Gina froze in time on 9:59 PM [ | ]
