Study Shows Home Birth Lowers Cesarean Risk

Study Shows Home Birth Lowers Cesarean Risk: "A landmark study published June 18 in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) shows planned home births with Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) result in significantly lower cesarean rates than planned hospital births."

“We hope the positive results of this home birth study will move the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) to review their protocols and guidelines to support women who choose home birth and to integrate Certified Professional Midwives into the healthcare system,” Jamois said. Currently, ACOG opposes home birth.

The largest study of its kind to date found “planned home births for low-risk women in the United States are associated with similar safety and less medical intervention as low-risk hospital births.” http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/abridged/330/7505/1416

This is good news for mothers who wish to avoid unnessecary intervetion. But I urge people to be savvie, Certified Proffessional Midwives should have earned a certification from the North American Registry of Midwives (www.narm.org) or have been licensed by the state. A cirtified Nurse Midwife is slighly different, they work with an obstetrician and most likely deliver in a hospital or birth center setting.

Threat of Pandemic Flu Shines Light on Poor Planning in US

Half a million Americans could die and more than 2 million could end up in the hospital with serious complications if an even moderately severe strain of a pandemic flu hits, a report predicted on Friday.

But the United States only has 965,256 staffed hospital beds, said the report from the Trust for America's Health.

The non-profit group's state-by-state analysis adds to a growing clamor of voices contending that the United States is not prepared for a large outbreak of disease, whether natural or brought on by war or terrorism.

This really shines a light on how broken our health care system is. While they seem to always threaten that THIS YEAR will be the year for a pandemic flu strain, I think this report highlights a more serious problem then the flu, our failing health care system in the US.

Artificial wombs here by 2010

Artificial wombs here by 2010:
"Researchers in Japan have successfully tested crude prototypes of artificial wombs with animals. And most experts believe a human version could be ready within the decade.

Advocates admit that “at first glance, the artificial womb seems like the Blade Runner technology of modern medicine gone amok”, said Gregory Pence, a bioethicists at University of Alabama and author of Brave New Bioethics.

Artificial wombs will most likely first be used as intensive care units for fetuses where either the mother is ill and can no longer carry the child, or where the fetus is ill and needs to be removed from the mother’s womb and cared for where it can be easily monitored."

While this may have the potential to save babies, this does come up with some tricky medical ethics. Would women who didn't want their "bodies wrecked" by pregnancy now order up a baby to be carried "artificially"? What about the bond that is developed between mother and baby, the heartbeat rythms and hearing the voices of familiy members? Would this stunt the emotional development of these children?

Skin Stem Cells Made into Bone and Muscle

The new study
, detailed today in the journal Stem Cells and Development, is among the first to actually show the ability of a single adult stem cell to become multiple tissue types.

"Our study shows that stem cells can be obtained from a simple skin biopsy and can be made to become three vital tissues," said Shay Soker, associate professor of surgery at Wake Forest's School of Medicine. "The bulk of our bodies is made up of fat, muscle and bone."

This has great potential for people with burns, to be able to grow thier own skin for skin grafts and eliminate rejection and would really increase the chance of survival. But in addition to that there is hope for conditions ranging from spinal cord injuries to diabetes.

New Scientist Breaking News - No paradox for time travellers

We can travel back in time and not change the present accourding to quantum theory.

"Now, physicists Daniel Greenberger of the City University of New York and Karl Svozil of the Vienna University of Technology in Austria have shown that the most basic features of quantum theory may ensure that time travellers could never alter the past, even if they are able to go back in time."

Quantum Theory says that objects (like you) behave like waves, and that the components of that object (ie your cells) each have a wave of their own that follows a distinctive path through space and time. If something "interferes" with that path the particles find each other again and continue on the same path.

Isn't science fun.

Nestle China again under attack for excess iodine in baby milk

Nestle China again under attack for excess iodine in baby milk - Yahoo! News: "Nestle apologized this month for putting too much iodine in its baby milk, but so far has only agreed to exchange sub-standard milk powder for powder that meets state requirements.

'We apologise for the mistake in deviating from the National Standard regarding the content of iodine in some Nestle milk-based powder products and we reaffirm that all Nestle products are safe for consumers to continue to use,' a statement said."

I have serious problems with Nestle and how they push baby formula in countries where breastfeeding would be the safest thing for the baby, in countries with poor sanitation and water. But it really erks me that they are not making sure their products are the best for the babies that do use them. Good for China!

Botox useful for preventing frequent migraines

Botox useful for preventing frequent migraines - Yahoo! News: "In the present study, 228 patients with chronic daily headache were randomly allocated to botulinum toxin injections or inactive 'placebo' injections of saline every 3 months for 11 months.

Dodick said that the injections are placed primarily in the area of the trigeminal nerve, but may continue into other areas as needed to 'follow the pain.' In the current study group, the number of injections during each treatment session ranged from 10 to 25 per patient.

Treatment with botulinum toxin reduced the frequency of migraine attacks per month from 14 to 6 -- a reduction of 55 percent. By contrast, with placebo, attacks dropped from 12.9 to 8.4 per month, for a significantly lower reduction of 35 percent.

Dodick said that treatment with Botox 'was also linked to a significant reduction in headache severity and with a drop in the use of acute headache medications.'"

I am a migraine sufferer and I know the pain. While I don't get anywhere near 15 per month and the current drugs out there work well for me, I am a little worried about this treatment. The botulinum toxin is serious stuff and I'm glad to see that they are looking into alternative uses for it, I still worry that people who are suffering will use this treatment without worrying about the side-effects.

Donated Eggs Bring Higher Miscarriage Risk

New research indicates that women who become pregnant with donated eggs are more likely to suffer miscarriages and dangerous high blood pressure than those who undergo fertility treatments with their own eggs.
There is a believe that donated eggs, like donated organs, are not genetically identical and are prone to immune system attacks. It is further speculated that the placenta may contain more of this "foreign" DNA and "trigger abnormal responses from the mother, which could results in complications, such as miscarriages or high blood pressure."

Experts recommend, that if a donated egg needs to be used, try getting one from a relative. Problems were two times higher in eggs donated from a sister, but women had five times more problems with eggs donated from a stranger.

Revealed - why IVF babies have a harder infancy

A new study has revealed why IVF babies may have a harder infancy. Invetro babies are usually smaller, born earlier, and spend more time in the hospital then naturally concieved babies, but a new study may tell us why. The key? Multipule transfer of embryos. It is comon for several embryos to be transfered to increas the odds of a pregency, but this also raise the risks.

De Neubourg and her team showed that IVF babies resulting from the transfer of a single embryo are as healthy as babies conceived normally.

"We analyzed the outcomes of 251 SET (single embryo transfer) pregnancies and births and found very little difference between SET babies and those naturally conceived," she added.

Dr. Anja Pinborg, of the University of Copenhagen, believes the difference in the health of babies following single or multiple embryo transfers could be competition in the womb.

Even if only one embryo survives, in the early stages of life "multiple embryos compete for the same nutrients and blood supply in the mother". So these children do not have the same early advantage as a single transfer embryo.

"They might have identified one of the puzzles of why IVF singletons are not exactly the same as naturally conceived singletons," Sunde said.

"The answer seems to be that there may be too many embryos in the womb - the one that died affected the one that survived," he added.

Plant chemical may harm male fertility - study - Yahoo! News

A plant chemical found in soya, tofu and legumes could potentially damage sperm and affect male fertility, a British researcher said on Wednesday.

Genistein, the chemical found in Soy and other legumes that mimics estrogen, can cause human sperm to "burn out and lose fertility."

But, even more significant is the maternal impact. Women who eat foods high in genistein may have a higher impact on sperm waiting to fertilize an egg in the females body.

Although it is very preliminary research, Fraser speculated that the findings could have an impact on women trying to conceive.

"On the basis of what we have seen, it might be a practical thing to do if you are in the habit of eating lots of soya-based products to restrict your diet for a short time over the window of ovulation," she told the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology meeting.

Common virus kills cancer

Common virus kills cancer, study finds

A common virus found in 80% of the population may be the key to a new cancer treatment.

'Our results suggest that adeno-associated virus type 2, which infects the majority of the population but has no known ill effects, kills multiple types of cancer cells yet has no effect on healthy cells,' said Craig Meyers, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the Penn State College of Medicine in Pennsylvania.

'We believe that AAV-2 recognizes that the cancer cells are abnormal and destroys them. This suggests that AAV-2 has great potential to be developed as an anti-cancer agent,' Meyers said in a statement.

In this study, cells were infected with HPV (a virus that can cause cervical cancer). The infected cells and normal cells were then infected with AAV-2, within six days all the HPV-infected cells were dead.

The same thing happened with cervical, breast, prostate and squamous cell tumor cells.

All are cancers of the epithelial cells, which include skin cells and other cells that line the insides and outsides of organs.

This could be a great discovery because so many of the current cancer treatments are so toxic and harmful to healthy cells and tissues.

Lions Rescue and Guard Beaten Ethiopian Girl

A 12 year-old girl was abducted and beaten by men trying to force her into marriage. She was found a week after her abduction being guarded by Lions that had chased off her abductors.

'They stood guard until we found her and then they just left her like a gift and went back into the forest,' Wondimu said.

Kidnapping young girls has long been part of the marriage custom in Ethiopia. The United Nations estimates that more than 70 percent of marriages in Ethiopia are by abduction, practiced in rural areas where most of the country's 71 million people live.

Just proof nature works in mysterious ways.

More Boys Born Than Girls in USA for 63rd Year Running

More Boys Born Than Girls in USA for 63rd Year Running: "For the 63rd year in a row, the number of boys born in the United States outnumbers births of girls - in 2002 94,232 more boys than girls were born. This is the central finding of a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that examines total sex ratios at birth for over six decades. "

This adds up to more than 5.7 million more boys being born than girls. Wile there are many reasons the CDC points to Mother's age, the Birth order, more children means more equality between boys and girls (although this did not work out of my grandmother who only had three girls out of eight) and the mother's ethnic background, they also admit they don't track things like environmental toxins, stress, maternal weight and fathers age all which may have an effect.

Baby Gender Mentor™ Home DNA Gender Testing Kit

The Pregnancy Store.com has their own do-it-yourself home gender testing kit will let mothers know the gender of their child as early as 5 weeks with 99.9% accuracy.

On some levels I think this is wonderful, a non-invasive, totally harmless was of finding out your child's gender. However, there could be a very dangerous thing. I have read many accounts of mothers desperately wanting a boy/girl and being disappointed when they find they are not having the baby they want. By being able to find out so early, 5 weeks after conception, it could make the choice to end a pregnancy and try again, easier.
